Welcome to the Erie Canal Museum

Locktender's Garden at the ECM

Along the Erie Canal there were eighty-three liftlocks and seven weighlocks. Locktenders lived in houses at each gate and kept gardens. The locktender was the communication link for people and progress, especially Europeans coming to America and traveling to establish lives in the mid-West. He was the nearest contact for passengers, and served as a source of fresh fruits, vegatables, flowers, herbs and information.

The Syracuse Garden Club has long supported the Erie Canal Museum and gave enthusiastic response to the Museum's request to design a garden such as could be seen along the canal.
